Set in 1987 Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, the play follows 18-year-old Ana Garcia, a recent high school graduate accepted to Columbia University, as she struggles to balance her dream of going away to college with her family's urgent need for her help. Her mother, Carmen, initially resists Ana's plans, favoring her sister Estela's garment factory order for 200 dresses, which is jeopardized by immigration raids and the deportation of one of their undocumented workers. Ana also takes an internship at a newspaper, meeting Henry, with whom she begins a romance. Amid family tensions, economic pressures, and the threat of deportation, Ana learns to embrace her body, assert her independence, and ultimately chooses to follow her own path, staying true to her ambitions while honoring her family's resilience.
