The story follows a fictionalized version of David Henry Hwang that begins with his public protest against the casting of a white actor in the Asian lead role of Miss Saigon. In a twist, DHH mistakenly hires a white actor, Marcus G. Dahlman, to play the same role in his own play, Face Value. As he tries to hide the error, the play becomes a comedic yet pointed exploration of cultural authenticity, the politics of casting, and the pressures of being an Asian American artist. The narrative blends satire with memoir, weaving in real events from Hwang's life, including his father's political scandal and his own struggles with public image.
