The play opens with Nora returning home on Christmas Eve, her life seemingly perfect but hiding a secret: she has been illegally borrowing money to save Torvald's life after a trip to Italy, forging her father's signature to cover the debt. She has been quietly repaying it for years, but the revelation of this act threatens to destroy their marriage and her social standing. Enter Krogstad, a low-level bank employee, who is the source of the secret. His presence forces Nora to confront the truth. As trhe plot unfolds, Nora's illusions about her marriage are shattered. She realizes Torvald is not the man she though he was, and she begins to question her own identity and place in society.
