The story follows Roxie Hart, a vaudeville starlet who murders her lover and is arrested, and Velma Kelly, a nightclub performer and double murderess, both of whom manipulate their stories to gain fame. In the Cook County Jail, they vie for the attention of slick lawyer Billy Flynn, who defends both, leading to a sensational trial where Roxie's fabricated pregnancy and passion defense secure her acquittal.
